Atlanta United Destroys Rivals Orlando City

Atlanta United picked up a crucial 3-0 win this Friday. This team actually looked exciting and entertaining. The last time we have truly seen a performance of that caliber was the 2019 US Open Cup Final. This result is now Atlanta’s biggest win of the season. The last time the five stripes scored three goals at home was the home opener against the Chicago Fire. At the end of the night Atlanta had simply outclassed the lions of Orlando.

Recent signing Luiz Araujo looked dangerous all night and came extremely close to scoring his first goal from the club when he saw his curling shot from distance strike the post. Soon afterward Atlanta took the lead through 20-year-old homegrown talent George Campbell. Atlanta took the corner short, and Marcelino Moreno was given plenty of space to whip in a great cross for George Campbell to head home. Only a little more than ten minutes later Atlanta found their second goal of the night. Atlanta looked dangerous all night, but it took them until the 72nd minute finally found their third goal of the match. Brooks Lennon’s long ball found Ezequiel Barco who dribbled past three defenders before slotting it in at the near post.

Atlanta United now has five wins, one draw, and one loss in its last seven matches. Ever science Gabriel Heinze left the club the team has improved tremendously. First Rob Valentino and now Gonzalo Pineda have made Atlanta an attacking team. Atlanta United took 18 shots tonight and 5 of them were on target. Atlanta also never looked to be in any danger of conceding. A good amount of credit has to go to Gonzalo Pineda for his tactics. The false 9 system worked wonders tonight. All of the front three looked like they were motivated and enjoying themselves. If Atlanta can continue to play like this they could be a real threat in the playoffs.

The five stripes will host FC Cincinnati at Mercedes Benz Stadium on Wednesday night. This should be a winnable match for Atlanta United as FC Cincinnati currently sit in 13th place in the Eastern Conference. Then their attention will turn to the crucial match against DC United next Saturday. This match is vital as Atalanta currently sits behind DC United on goal differential. Dc currently occupies the final playoff spot in the East and a win against them would be a huge confidence boost for this group of players. Only time will tell what this win will mean to Atlanta’s season, but you can bet on there being a real push for the playoffs at the end of this season.
